Experts giving talk on chronic wasting disease
CUSICK — Two experts on chronic wasting disease are giving a talk on CWD this month.
Hunter Wastacott, CWD surveillance coordinator at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and TC Peterson, Kalispel Tribe of Indians wildlife biologist, will speak at 5 p.m. March 13 at the Camas Center for Community Wellness, 1821 LeClerc Rd. N. in Cusick. They will present the latest information about CWD, including causes, spread, symptoms, occurrence and human risk from contact with an infected animal.
CWD is a serious threat to deer, elk, moose and reindeer, according to a Selkirk Alliance for Science press release. It is 100% lethal and highly contagious. CWD occurs in four Canadian provinces, 36 American states and was recently found in Northeastern Washington.
The talk comes from a collaboration between Selkirk Alliance for Science and the Kalispel Natural Resources Department. Responsible Growth*Northeast Washington and Create Arts Center in Newport are also supporting the event.
The talk is free to the public, and all are welcome, according to the press release.
