Chronic wasting disease subject of Thursday talk

CUSICK —Chronic wasting disease is a serious threat to deer, elk and moose. The 100% lethal, highly contagious disease was recently found in Northeastern Washington.

Kalispel Tribe of Indians wildlife biologist TC Peterson will be joined by Hunter Wastacott, CWD surveillance coordinator at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, to speak at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 13, at the Camas Center for Community Wellness, 1821 LeClerc Rd. N. in Cusick.

They will present the latest information about CWD, including causes, spread, symptoms, occurrence and human risk from contact with an infected animal.

CWD occurs in four Canadian provinces and 36 American states.

The talk comes from a collaboration between Selkirk Alliance for Science and the Kalispel Natural Resources Department. Responsible Growth*Northeast Washington and Create Arts Center in Newport are also supporting the event.

The talk is free to the public, and all are welcome, according to the news release.

Public comment for migratory game bird season

BOISE – Idaho Fish and Game is seeking comments on proposed migratory game bird seasons for 2025-26.

Fish and Game staff will present all season proposals to the Commission for review during the April 15 conference call.

Hunters can review these proposals online and provide input on the Migratory Game Bird webpage. The deadline to comment is March 23. Comments will be taken on: Ducks, mergansers, coots and Wilson’s snipe; Canada geese; Light geese (Snow and Ross’s geese); White-fronted geese; Swan; Mourning and white-winged doves; American crow; Sandhill crane.

The Fish and Game Commission will finalize the 2025-26 migratory game bird seasons during its April 15 conference call. There will be an open house and public meeting Thursday, March 14, from 5-7 p.m. at the IDFG office at 2885 W.
