NEWPORT – There will be a weekend retreat on “Standing Up for Compassion” Friday, April 4, to Sunday, April 6, at Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport. Senior Buddhist nuns Venerable Thubten Semkye and Venerable Thubten Jigme will lead the retreat. All are welcomed, and registration is required. Details are in the Events section at SravastiAbbey.org.
The retreat will focus on developing internal tools like wisdom, compassion, and ethics that enable clear engagement with the world when the moral compasses of our families, communities, and countries are going haywire. Teachings will identify harmful emotions we think will correct the crazy compass, and why compassion and ethics are our real allies in keeping us pointed true north.
Vens. Semkye and Jigme’s teachings will draw from Buddhism for Beginners, written by Sravasti Abbey founder and abbess Venerable Thubten Chodron. Other Abbey monastics will lead guided meditations on topics drawn from the teachings.
Venerable Thubten Semkye was the Abbey’s first lay resident. She met Ven. Thubten Chodron at the Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle in 1996 and moved to the Abbey in 2004. She became the Abbey’s third nun in 2007 and took full ordination in Taiwan in 2010.
Venerable Thubten Jigme has been a student of Ven. Thubten Chodron since 1998 and moved to the Abbey in 2008. She took novice ordination in 2009 and full ordination in Taiwan in 2011.
Sravasti Abbey is a Buddhist monastery in the Tibetan Tradition. All programs are in English and the Abbey offers meditation courses and retreats, has an extensive YouTube channel, and supports its founder, Venerable Thubten Chodron, to publish books on Buddhist philosophy that are read worldwide.
