Search and Rescue giving free presentation

NEWPORT — Pend Oreille County Search and Rescue is giving a free presentation on the methods search teams use to efficiently and effectively implement a successful search.

Offered in collaboration with Selkirk Alliance for Science, “Search and Rescue - The Science Behind A Successful Mission” is at 6 p.m. April 16 at the Create Arts Center, 900 W. 4th St. in Newport. All ages are welcome to attend the presentation.

Guest speaker Andy Johnsen of SAR will identify the myriad factors that go into local search and rescue efforts, as well as speak about some real-life incidents and their outcomes.

In World War II, search and rescue operations used a simple but systematic grid pattern to find a specific target. Nowadays, a combination of scientific research, advanced technology and volunteers guide search and rescue work. For one, around 75 categories are now assigned to different types of lost persons, their collective actions and distances wandered.

Supporters of “Search and Rescue - The Science Behind A Successful Mission” include the Kalispel Natural Resources Department, Responsible Growth Northeast Washington and Create Arts Center.

One random attendee will receive a science-related door prize.
