COLVILLE — Priest River Spartan Nike Porinchok won first in discus at the Ezra Gordon Invitational in Colville Saturday, March 29.
“The outstanding Spartan performance for the meet was Niki’s throw of 157 feet, 6 inches in the discus,” Spartan coach Jared Hughes says. “This moves him up to No. 2 all time for Priest River, second best in Idaho 3A and the fifth best throw statewide.”
Porinchok also won third in shot put. Because of Spring Break, Priest River was missing several athletes, but the boys’ team still finished sixth and the girls’ team eighth out of the 16 teams competing.
Chase Smith won second in the javelin and second in the triple jump.
The boys 4x100m relay team also won second. The team is made up of Carter Korff, Ian Lamanna, Luccass Simcox and Gunnar Pettit.
Simcox also won third in the long jump and Lamanna took third in the pole vault and fourth in the 400 meters.
On the girls’ side, top finishers included the 4x100m relay team. They took third. The team is made up of Haley Braae, Ashlyn Korff, Jasmine Stark and Klyee Swoboda.
The same runners also won third in the 4x200 meter relay. Swoboda won fifth in the high jump, Lizzie McCracken won fifth in the 800 meters and Jasmine Stark won seventh in the pole vault.
The Spartans placed in the top eight in 22 events. Hughes says placing in the meet isn’t the only thing that counts for his athletes.
“Another indicator to gauge success at meets is the percentage of athletes with at least one season or lifetime best,” he says. “We had 23 of the 27 athletes or 85% do that on Saturday. The goal is always 100%, but this is a good percentage to show the hard work they are putting in.”
