NEWPORT — The Newport girls softball team started the season with two wins over Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, but the Grizzlies lost the next four games.
Newport beat over Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 12-7 and 9-5 in a doubleheader March 22.
They were home for a league game with Northwest Christian Tuesday, March 25, losing 9-1.
They were back home again for a non-league game with Riverside Thursday, March 27. Despite home runs by Newport sophomore Lillanna Hall and junior Genica Kreider, Riverside got the 8-4 win.
Newport had six hits in the game.
Next the Grizzlies went to Northwest Christian, where they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, including a home run from Bella Boyd. Kreider also hit a double. The Crusaders answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first inning, then pounded the Grizzlies with seven runs in each of the next two innings to get the 16-2 win.
The second game didn’t go much better. Boyd hit another homer in the fifth inning and Newport got six hits, but it wasn’t enough. Northwest Christian stayed undefeated in league play with a 15-5 five inning win.
Saturday, April 5, Newport (0-3, 2-4) is home against Kettle Falls (1-0, 2-1) in a game that starts at noon.
