Cusick baseball starts winning

CUSICK — After a slow start to the season, the Cusick Panthers baseball team has started winning. Saturday, April 5, Cusick won both games of a home doubleheader against Republic, taking the first game 12-3 and the second 19-4.

Judah Sutton hit a triple and had two RBIs in the first game. David Lyon was the winning pitcher. Kaden Person got a triple in the second game. Person also pitched the second game.

Cusick next travels to Northport for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 16.

Kellogg, Riverside rallies nip Spartans

PRIEST RIVER — Kellogg scored five runs in the seventh inning to narrowly defeat the Priest River Spartans 5-4 Thursday, April 3 in a league game at Priest River.

Saturday, April 5, a sixth inning rally by the Riverside Rams knocked off the Priest River Spartans 7-5. The Spartans were up 4-0 at the top of the second inning before Riverside scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Both teams scored again in the fifth inning before Riverside scored three runs in the sixth, and the Spartans couldn’t answer in the top of the seventh.

Priest River has a Central Idaho League record of 2-4 and is 2-5 overall. The Spartans go to Newport for a game Thursday, April 10 at 2 p.m.

Newport softball wins league doubleheader

NEWPORT — The Newport Grizzlies softball team won both games of a Northeast 2B League double header Saturday, April 5 at Newport. The Grizzlies won the first game 11-8 and the second 15-4.

“Genica Kreider was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-3,” Newport coach Steve Braun says. “Those two home runs gave her a new career high.”

Ella Monk scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4 at bat.

“Lilli Hall did an amazing job pitching both games of the doubleheader and Bella Boyd had a home run in the second game,” Braun says. “In general, we had a lot of good hitting from everyone and aggressive base running.”

The wins turned around a losing streak for Newport. After losing 16-2 to Northwest Christian and 15-5 the previous Saturday, they fell 10-5 to Kettle Falls Tuesday, April 1, before getting wins Saturday.

Newport is 2-4 in league play and 4-5 overall.
