Newport soccer beats Riverside

NEWPORT — The Newport boys soccer team beat last year’s Northeast 1A League champion Riverside 3-2 Thursday, April 3 at Newport.

“It was the second time Newport’s beaten Riverside in the last five years,” Newport coach Nick Tucker says.

The Rams dominated at first, with Jacob Graham scoring the first two goals at 37 minutes into the game and 44 minutes.

The Grizzlies were not deterred however, with Truce Ugartechea scoring the first goal for Newport at 56 minutes with an assist by Jaden Totland. Totland assisted Gryphen Bilaski with his goal at the 69-minute mark and Brennan Jones clinched the win for Newport at 78 minutes. Grizzly goalie Jack Youk had 11 saves throughout the game.

“It definitely feels good to get this win, especially over a quality opponent like Riverside,” Tucker says. “I feel like we have controlled possession for most of the time this season but weren’t able to finish with goals until this game. I think we’re finally over the hump and should see some great results over the next few weeks.”

According to high school sports website MaxPreps, Youk is the 23rd best goalkeeper out of 500 high school soccer goalies in the nation with 117 saves.

Next up for Newport is an away game in Colville Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
