NEWPORT — Newport’s No. 2 boy’s singles player Jeffrey Newman won a grueling match over his Chewelah opponent Friday, April 4.
“Jeffrey played close to a three-hour match,” Newport coach Brandon Mc-Daniel says. “He was one of the first to go on and the last match of the evening to finish.”
Newman won the first set in a tiebreak and lost the second set 7-5.
“In the third set tiebreaker, Jeff went up early and put it out of reach to get the 10-4 win,” McDaniel says.
Preston Davis, the No. 1 boys’ singles player won his match in two sets, after being down 3-0 in the second set.
“He found a bit of a slump and then went back to being aggressive and putting the point away when he should, which is great to see from a coach’s standpoint,” McDaniel says.
Newport’s David Atkins lost at No. 3 singles and both teams forfeited their doubles matches, so Newport boys got the 2-1 win.
The girls team lost 5-0 to Chewelah. “Chewelah is a very good program with some amazing players. I love playing them because it really shows where we are as a program and gives our players an amazing challenge,” McDaniel says.
Earlier in the week, they played St. George’s at home Thursday, with the girls’ team winning 3-2 and the boys getting swept.
“The boys played well, but St George’s has some really good singles players that were just too much for us this time around,” McDaniel says.
On the girls’ side, Lindsay Collison had a great match winning 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.
“Lindsay is really coming along and finding a lot of confidence in her forehand right now,” McDaniel says. “Her serve is a big weapon and she can still grow a ton even with the success she is already experiencing.”
Olivia Sears and Emmalee Doughty lost in three sets, their first loss of the season at No. 1 doubles.
Olivia Jackman and Grace Keck won at No. 2 doubles, also in three sets.
“Grace and Olivia came up big for us and secured the win in a third set tiebreak 10-8,” McDaniel says of the 3-2 girls team win.
