Team scores big at Sandpoint Invite
SANDPOINT — Spartan harriers and hurlers continue to carpe some diem in track and field events, with most of the team at Sandpoint for the Inaugural Lake Pend Oreille Invite while senior standout Brayden Lamanna qualified and attended the Pasco Invite. Both events were Saturday, April 12.
“An amazing day for an amazing kid is the best way I can describe the day Brayden had in Pasco,” Priest River coach Jared Hughes said. “His hard work once again paid dividends as he smashed a 33-year-old record in the 1600-meter by five seconds and followed that up by taking 11 seconds off of his own recently set record in the 3200-meter.”
The athletes competing at Sandpoint also had some great performances.
There were 27 of the 29 Spartan athletes that had a lifetime or seasonal best last Saturday. Leading the way for the girls were sophomore Jasmine Stark and senior Kylee Swoboda. Each scored 32 points apiece. For the boys, junior Niki Porinchok and senior Carter Korff led the way each scoring 26 points.
“Another amazing statistic is that we had 25 out of 29 athletes score at least one team point,” Hughes said. “The coaching staff is really proud of the work put in by the kids and their willingness to step up when needed.
Another testament to the great work by the athletes and assistant coaches.”
Hughes also noted that senior athletes Carter Korff and Haley Braae were named as Priest River Lamanna High School’s recipients of the Hagadone “High Character Award” at the North Idaho Hall of Fame Awards last Saturday night.
This week the Spartans will be part of two track meets. On Tuesday, April 15 Priest River traveled to Post Falls for the Christina Finney Relays. The Spartans host the 28th Annual Priest River Invite Saturday, April 19. The team will also recognize its 11 seniors prior to starting the PR invite at about 9:40 a.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with the PR invite.
“A successful meet can only happen with volunteers from the staff, parents and community members,” Hughes said.
“If you can help, please reach out to the junior/senior high school athletics office at 208-448-1211.”
