PRIEST RIVER — Learn the art of sharpening knives at 11 a.m. Saturday April 19 at the Priest River Library. Join local outdoorsman and historian Shaun Deller for an informative and hands-on class on knife sharpening.
Participants will learn to make their own sharpening kit, how to maintain their own knives using a variety of materials and learn a bit of knife history in the process. Participants are asked to bring a knife from home to work with.
Open to ages 18 and up unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Class is free and registration is necessary.

County has volunteer openings
NEWPORT – Pend Oreille County has several volunteer openings on several boards and commissions.
The Noxious Weed Control Board has an opening in District No. 4. This Board is charged with the cooperative control and management of noxious weeds, develops and manages Weed Board policy, adopts the County weed list which identifies mandatory weed control, reviews and oversees the annual budget, responds to community inquiries or complaints, and holds public hearings on new weed policy.

Members are appointed from five districts to fouryear terms. Meetings are the second Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Weed Board Office in Newport.
The Board of Equalization has an opening for someone interested in serving as an alternate member to complete a three-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2026. The BOE functions as an appeals board to hear tax assessment appeals and to act as an equalization board. There is a $100-day stipend per meeting.
The Civil Service Commission has one opening on a three-member commission. This is a volunteer position and will fill an unexpired six-year term which expires Dec.
31, 2028. The Commission meets once monthly.
Members must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Pend Oreille County for at least two years, and a registered voter.
