NEWPORT — At least once a week, Kimberly Allen tries to go treasure-hunting.
Allen was doing just that on the afternoon of March 4 at Second Chances, a thrift store in Newport that sells antiques, collectibles and countless other goods secondhand. She and her children had just gotten back into town after a family skiing trip and were browsing the aisles of the thrift store together.
“I just like to find treasures,” Allen said. “Anything interesting, unique. Something that’s a surprise.”
Besides Second Chances, she is a regular customer at a host of secondhand stores in the Newport and Priest River areas. Another one of her go-tos is Petticoat Junction, also in Newport.
What secondhand stores sell has a history, Allen said. And you can buy some of that history in high quality at affordable prices.
“They have a story behind it, usually,” Allen said. “It’s not just quick, manufactured.”
Second Chances and Petticoat Junction are just two of over a dozen secondhand stores spanning Newport, Priest River and a few other cities within The Miner’s readership area. Second Chances is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Mondays at 400 N. Washington Ave., but not for much longer.
The store is closing on April 20, after a three-day close-out sale from April 17 to 19. On the first two days the sale will be 50% off, with group pricing on the third and final day.
Up to closing, Second Chances will continue to sell games, books, albums, collectibles and more at comparative to low prices.
The secondhand store is transitioning into an estate sales company, citing a lack of staffing to remain as the former. Clients can rent the building for their own sales, using the cash register and shelving left over from its days as Second Chances.
Even so, “We’ll miss it,” Allen said.
The Miner could not reach Now & Then Antiques or Shaw’s Antiques for comment. At 321 S.
