NEWPORT – Locally in Washington state, city councils, school boards, hospital and port districts as well as fire and sewer districts all have positions up for election this year, with Primary Elections set for August. They are all non-partisan positions.
The candidate filing period begins Monday, May 5, and ends Friday, May 9. Mail-in declarations are accepted beginning April 21. To run for office, candidates must complete and file a Declaration of Candidacy, meet the qualifications for the office at the time of filing, and be registered to vote in the district, according to the Pend Oreille County Auditor’s Office.
For the Port of Pend Oreille, the commissioner district 1 position currently held by Kim Gentle is up for election. It’s for a six-year term Mayor positions in all four municipalities are up for election. That includes the seats currently held by Keith Campbell in Newport, Pete Daggett in Metaline, Tina Alford in Cusick, Michael Shipley in Ione and Tara Leininger in Metaline Falls.
Multiple council seats in each of the municipalities are up for election.
In Newport that includes position 1, 2 and 3; in Cusick positions 1, 2 and 5; in Ione positions 1, 2, 3 and 5, in Metaline, positions 1 2, and 4 and in Metaline Falls positions 1, 2 and 4.
There are also hospital district commissioner positions. In Hospital District 1, commission seats 4 and 5 are up. In Hospital District 2 in the north end of the county, position 3 is up for election.
All three county school districts have positions for which to run. In the Newport School District, director positions 1 and 2; in the Cusick School District director positions 1, 3 and 5; in the Selkirk School District, director positions 1, 2 and an at large position.
Fire Districts have commissioners’ seats up for election. In South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue, commissioner positions 3, 4 and 5 are up for election. In Fire District 2, commissioner 3, in Fire District 4 commissioner 3 and in Fire District 5, commissioner 2 and 3.
Cemetery District No. 1 has two commission seats, 1 and 3 for election.
Cemetery District No. 3 has three commissioners 1, 2 and 3.
Chippewa Water Sewer District has commissioner positions 1 and 3, Lenora Water Sewer has commissioner 2 and 3, Diamond Lake Water Sewer commissioner 3, Ponderay Shores Water Sewer commissioner 1 and Sacheen Lake Water Sewer commissioners 1 and 3 are all up for reelection.
