The annual Masonic Lodge Junior Achievement Awards were presented Thursday, April 17 at the Masonic Lodge in Newport. The Masonic Lodge gives certificates to winners for personal developments for high school juniors.
The Masonic Lodge sends each of Pend Oreille County’s three school districts applications, which interested students complete and return. They come to Newport for an inspirational talk and luncheon, with the luncheon prepared by the Eastern Star. The applications are similar to the scholarship applications and winners’ names go on a trophy for each of the school districts.
The Masonic Lodge conducts several programs, including a program in which stuffed puppies are distributed to all the kindergartners in Pend Oreille County. That program, which originated in Newport, has spread to Free Masons Lodges throughout the state.
The Masonic Lodge also has the Bikes for Books program. Students at elementary schools get a ticket for each book they read which is entered into a drawing in the fall and spring for a bicycle.
The lodge also has a scholarship program, in which $1,000 scholarships are given to students from each school district.
The Masonic Lodge welcomes new members. Anyone interested in joining can call the Lodge secretary Dave Porter at 509-589-1730.
