Local races develop after candidate filing

NEWPORT – There weren’t too many surprises in the candidate filing that concluded last Friday in Pend Oreille County.

There are opponents for the two Pend Oreille County commission races, for District 1 and District 3. Incumbent Brian Smiley filed for reelection as the District 3 county commissioner. Kevin Young is running against him. Both are running as Republicans.

District 1 incumbent John Gentle is running against Steve Haroldson Minnich for the District 1 county commission seat. Since the county commissioner positions are partisan they will appear on the primary ballot even though both will likely move on to the general election.

Incumbent Pend Oreille Public Utility District commissioner Joe Onley is running for reelection to a six-year term representing District 1. He will face Troy Moody for the non-partisan position. Since it is a non partisan position, neither will appear on the primary election ballot and both will move on to the general election.

Washington is a top two state, meaning if only two people are running they advance to the November general election, regardless of party.

With Superior Court Judge Pat Monasmith retiring, N. Smith “Smitty” Hagopian of Colville and Lisa Malpass Childress of Elk are running to replace him for the non-partisan position.

The other Superior Court judges, Lech J. Radzimski and Jessica Taylor Reeves, are running unopposed for the judge position 2 and 3 jobs.

Statewide, there were 25 people running for governor, including three Bob Fergusons, all running as Democrats. One Bob Ferguson is the current Secretary of State. The two others withdrew after being threatened with legal action.

For the state legislature, there are many candidates for the two Legislative District 7 Republican representatives who are not running – Jacquelin Maycumber and Joel Kretz. Kretz is retiring and Maycumber is running for Congress.

Running for Kretz’ old seat, position 1, are Teagan Levine, Andrew Engel and Soo Ing-Moody.

They are running as Republicans. Running for the position formerly held by Maycumber, position 2, are Ronald L. McCoy, Hunter Abell and Pat Bell, all running as Republicans. Running as a Democrat for position 2 is Paul “Rocky” Dean. The top two vote getters in the primary election, regardless of party, will advance to the general election.

For Congressional Representative District 5, the seat held by Cathy McMorris Rodgers, there are 11 candidates. Six are Republicans and five are Democratic candidates. McMorris Rodgers is not seeking reelection.

Running as Republicans are: Rick Valentine Flynn of Cheney, Rene’ Holaday of Addy, Jacquelin Maycumber of Republic, Jonathan D. Bingle of Spokane, Brian Dansel of Republic and Michael Baumgartner of Spokane.

Running as Democrats are Bernadine Bank of Colbert, Bobbi Bennett-Wolcott of Pullman, Matthew Welde of Liberty Lake, Ann Marie Danimus of Spokane Valley and Carmela Conory of Spokane.

The primary election is Aug. 6.
