NEWPORT – Costumed swords play greeted spectators as actors gingerly sidestepped each other parrying with each draw of the sword at the third annual Renaissance Fair in Newport Saturday.
“Some of the best things are actual fight displays and choreographed fighting with live action role playing,” Robert Bauer said.
Andri and Kali Kutsaur of Usk were present with their children. It was their second year they participated.
“It’s a great experience and educational to see how they dress up,” Andri Kutsaur said.
“We came mainly for our kids,” Kali Kutsaur replied.
The Newport Library District organized the fair as a way for the public to come out and celebrate the occasion.
“We are hoping for double the turn out from last year,” Newport Library employee Brianna Williamson said.
“We are hoping each year it grows a little more to serve the community even better.”
With such a wide variety of vendors, performers, and crafts and activities for children (like face painting), there was plenty to do and see at the fair.
This makes two years the Gage family has been to the Newport Renaissance fair selling candles, resin, crystal balls, and mystic sea salt.
“We depend on our booths here and we go to the fairs in Spokane and Sand Point and the northeast Pagan festival,” Amber Gage said.
Harrison Escobar, dressed as a medievalist, sold wooden swords and wooden shields as his wife Stephanie signed her latest fantasy books for the crowd.
“We were into Lord of the Rings and the people the fair brings. You get to step out of the regular day to day and get to live in a different world,” Escobar said.
