Newport softball defeats Deer Park

DEER PARK – Newport defeated Deer Park Wednesday 12-9 ending the softball season with their only win.

After Deer Park went ahead, running in 3 players in the first inning for a score of 3-0, Newport surged ahead in the third inning 5-4 and never yielded ending the game in seven innings.

Senior Koyes Reedy and sophomore Genica Kreider hit triples, with doubles from Brooklyn and Bella Boyd, Reedy, Kreider and Laney Bojorquez.

“It was so nice to really come together as a team and play hard. It was also a great way for our seniors to end the season,” coach Steve Braun says.

Newport will be losing three seniors: Brooklyn Boyd, Bojorquez and Reedy.

“Brooklyn will be missed as our starting pitcher and she led our team in batting average and RBI’s,” Braun says. “Laney is a great team leader, an amazing outfielder, and has good batting averages. Koyes was a consistent play with good batting skills.”

Newport finished seventh in league standings.

“Next season will be different because we will move to the 2B League so we plan on approaching it as a new challenge and we plan on having a better season next year as far as wins and losses go,” Braun says. “This year’s challenges were knowing how to finish games and battling through errors.”
