Economic development meeting announced

NEWPORT - An Economic Development Open House is scheduled for Monday, June 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Newport High School Cafeteria in Newport.

SCJ Alliance and Michael Terrell Landscape Architecture will be there with boards on each of the individual properties that the feasibility studies are to be completed on.

They, along with Port staff, will be taking input from the community on three potential projects.

Thanks to a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce the county’s economic development arm has an opportunity to conduct feasibility studies on three sites in Pend Oreille County. The timeline is short due to the grant deadlines so hearing from the community is incredibly helpful in determining next steps as the studies show what development could take place.

This is followed by a EDAC meeting on June 27 at 8:30 am at the Camas Center in Usk.

Graduation this weekend

High school graduations are upon students who spent their childhood and youth being taught by teachers for the first 12 years of their education. Yet learning never stops as these graduates step out to get their diplomas and into their futures. Many will eventually become parents who will see their children walk the stage on their graduation day.

Friday June 7, Newport High School graduates will have a community parade at 5 p.m. prior to their ceremony at the Newport High School gym at 7 p.m.

The Pend Oreille River School will graduate Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m. in the Newport High School gymnasium.

Also, on Friday June 7, at 8:30 p.m. Cusick High School graduates will step onto the Kalispel Pow Wow Grounds to receive their diplomas.

Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m., graduation starts for graduates at Priest River Lamanna High School. Later that day, Selkirk graduation ceremony begins at 1 p.m. at the high school gym.

According to a spokesperson for Bonner County EMS, the incident was reported about 11 a.m. The man was Lifeflighted to Spokane.

The man was identified as Kevin Paulis by his sister, Laura Paulis.

Laura Paulis, who is in Alaska, has been in touch with her family. She says that Kevin Paulis, 68, was apparently working on scaffolding when he fell.

“He’s had a couple surgeries,” she said. “He’s still in the Intensive Care Unit. He’s in a coma.”

The police report indicated the accident occurred at an E. 2nd Street, North, location in Oldtown.

Since there were no reported witnesses, Laura Paulis said she hopes anyone who saw the accident or who may have video of the accident contact the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.
