Registration open for aquatic life workshop

NEWPORT – Registration is open for the Pend Oreille County Noxious Weed Board’s 2024 Aquatic Life & Property Management Workshop on July 12 at the Camas Center for Community Wellness.

This workshop is an educational opportunity for aquatic recreationalists and landowners alike. This year, it’s offered in-person and via Zoom. In partnership with the Pend Oreille County Public Utility District, this free workshop welcomes expert speakers to identify resources available to waterfront stakeholders for the management of noxious aquatic weeds.

Participants will take part in hands-on demonstrations for weed identification, removal, and boat decontamination. Join us to learn about shoreline health, property improvements, invasive species like northern pike and their cyclic relationship with flowering rush and the importance of aquatic weed management to protect Pend Oreille waterways.

“Considering upstream and recreational contaminants, community investment in aquatic weed management is crucial to maintain healthy and navigable waters.

With active landowner, recreationalist, and agency participation in the mitigation of aquatic weeds like flowering rush or invasive plants, we can protect and continue to enjoy lakes and rivers in Pend Oreille County,” Weed Board Coordinator Loretta Nichols said.

The workshop will be held on Friday, July 12, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Camas Center at 1821 Leclerc Rd. N5, in Cusick. In-person attendees will get a free lunch with chances to win door prizes. Washington pesticide license holders may receive five recertification credits for participating. Idaho Pesticide License Recertification credits are pending.

To register, complete the online form at www. pendoreilleco.org/weedboard/ page/2024-aquatic- workshop-registration. Those planning to attend in person are asked to register by June 27, as an official lunch count is due in advance. Virtual attendance registration will remain open through July 10.
