Newport golfers missed the state cut

CHEHALIS – Chase Warren and Mykla Kiehn barely missed the cut at the state tournament at Riverside Golf Course.. Kiehn shot 104 but 101 was the cut line for the girls. Warren shot 92 but the boys’ cut line was 88.

Lilly Knight from Freeman finished seventh in the girls and Wyatt Priddy from Deer Park finished 10th on the boys side.

The weather was cold and rainy and the rough was pretty thick, coach Eric Slinger says.

“Next year will be completely different since we are moving down a league so we will be playing new schools at new courses but Freeman is coming with us,” Slinger says.

“Also, I feel good about our boys team next year since we only had one graduate,” he says.

“Mykla was a great player the last three years for our team and will definitely be missed but I’m still hopeful that we can start getting more girls to try out since there are so many scholarships in girls’ golf,” Slinger says.

Newport had a lot of great golfers through the years and many have gotten college scholarships, Slinger says, but Newport has never had a full girls team of four players or more.
