Soroptimists celebrate 60 years of scholarships

NEWPORT - This year, Soroptimist International of Newport celebrates the 60th anniversary of its scholarship giving. To date, the Newport based nonprofit organization has provided more than $34,700 in scholarships to 94 students and in the process helped them realize their dreams of earning an education beyond high school. This year’s Girl of the Month Scholarship recipients include Sophia Stott and Anna Jones.

Over 450 Newport High School senior girls have been recognized for their academic achievement, involvement in school activities, their work and service to the community through the Girl of the Month program. Former Girl of the Month Lacey Aubrey, a high school Spanish teacher in California, reflected back on what it meant to receive the Girl of the Month recognition in 2002. “It was an honor to be chosen for it. I remember thinking of the girls (now women) who were chosen in the same year and in previous years and what they represented for our community. They had strong characters and integrity, so I was grateful I was thought of in that way as well.”

“Education is a core value of the Soroptimist mission and education is the key to unlocking economic empowerment of the world’s women and girls. We are delighted to continue the tradition of scholarship giving that began in 1964,” said Nicole Dice, President of Soroptimist International of Newport. “Our long-standing commitment investing in the future dreams and aspirations of girls remains at the forefront of Soroptimist of Newport’s efforts to have a positive impact on the lives of women and girls.”

Soroptimist International of Newport was chartered in 1946 with May Sherman as the first president. The club today continues the goals envisioned by the first Newport Soroptimists. The club sponsors many fundraising events throughout the year, including the Bunco and various raffles. Over the years, Soroptimist of Newport has funded, participated and supported many projects helping to improve our local schools, hospital and other local civic organizations.
