110 years ago 1914

Pend Oreille COunty Auditor H.H.

Murray was elected president of the Washington State Auditors at a convention in Vancouver.

Immigration agents for Great Northern Railroad were in Newport to obtain accurate information for people interested in moving to the area.

100 years ago 1924

The Newport City Council held a special meeting to open bids for the interior decoration of city hall. The city awarded the low bid of $242 to George Weeks.

The repair work was the first on city hall since it was completed in 1913.

The new hospital was almost completed. Equipment was moved from the old hospital on Washington Avenue.

90 years ago 1934

The post office was restored to a second class reclassification, made necessary by an increase in receipts. The post office was mad third class about a year before.

Diamond Lake Resort was gearing up for the Fourth of July.

80 years ago 1944

A director of U.S. Mines predicts the Metaline area could develop into a leading producer of zinc for the nation.

Intensive studies in the area indicated large deposits of the mineral.

A Camden youth was killed and his brother and a friend were seriously injured when they were struck by lightning. The three had stepped under an apple tree after a storm had begun.

70 years ago 1954

Albeni Falls Dam was nearing completion. The first turbine was imbedded. Its moving parts were expected to be installed July 10.

The county donated $2,460 to the March of Dimes.

60 years ago 1964

A runaway railroad boxcar carrying 35 tons of logs to Diamond International jumped the tracks and dumped them into the Pend Oreille River.

The Seattle City Council authorized a $60 million bond to finance the Boundary Dam project.

50 years ago 1974

The area got a taste of summer weather with five straight days of 90 degree temperatures.

With Expo ‘74 in full swing, the Forest Service announced campgrounds may be full all summer.

40 years ago 1984

If all goes as planned, a joint effort by Pend Oreille County and the Port of Pend Oreille to obtain a grant for 1984-85 that could double the county’s current tax base.

Thanks to a state grant, the Newport School District was able to establish a program for gifted students in grades 4 through 12 during the 1984-85 school year. The $3,068 grant would mark the first time a gifted program has been implemented in the district.

30 years ago 1994

Carrying of rifles in vehicle gun racks continue in Pend Oreille County after commissioners voted to exempt the county from the recent state law that required guns to be carried in “opaque case or secure wrapper.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance for people who want to ride the bus that will operate between Newport and the rodeo grounds, with occasional trips to Diamond Lake and Priest River and possibly other areas out of town. Tickets to ride the Newport Rodeo Trolley or the “Big Yellow Bus” cost $1.

20 years ago 2004

Some Idaho restaurant patrons will b heading outdoors starting July 1, and the weather has nothing to do with it. The first of the month marks a change in Idaho law that makes it illegal to smoke inside public places, excluding bars and bowling alleys.

Cecil Wylie agreed to serve as Bull of The Woods for the 2004 Priest River Timber Days. Wylie worked many years in the woods, operating a bulldozer and doing other jobs.
