Roping tough at Newport Rodeo

Oregon cowboy wins team roping, second in calf roping for All Around

NEWPORT – The 75th annual Newport Rodeo wrapped up its three-day stand Saturday night, with the winners of five events earning championships during the final performance. Top performances in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing were turned in Saturday night.

Timed event cowboy Jordan Tye of Canby, Oregon won the All Around Cowboy award, pocketing $3,645 in team roping and tie down roping. The All Around Cowboy award is given to the contestant who wins the most money in two or more events.

In the team roping, Tye and heeler Andy Carlson of Heppner, Oregon, roped their steer in a speedy time of 4.9 seconds Saturday night to win that event.

They collected $2,076 each.

Tye went on to win second in the tie down roping later that performance. Zaine Mikita, of Byers, Colorado, turned in 9.4 second run during the rodeo’s first performance Thursday night. That held up for the win and $1,805 for Mikita. Tye roped and tied his calf in 9.6 seconds to win second.

Breakaway roper Mattie Turner of Wilsonville, Oregon, captured her calf in 2.5 seconds to win that event and $2,058. Paige Belle Camp of Paola, Kansas won second with a time of 2.6 seconds.

The most money in one event was won in the steer roping, which took place in the slack performance Saturday morning. Brian Garr of Grandview, Texas, won the two head competition, roping, tripping and tying two steers in 24.1 seconds.

He won the first go round with a 10.7 second time and placed fourth in the second go-round with a time of 13.4. In all, he pocketed $3,072.

Tim Ditrich of Coeur d’Alene won the saddle bronc riding Saturday night with the rodeo’s highest score, 82 points on Aces Wild’s bronc Paradise. He won $1,914 for the ride.

Deuds Deudney of Odessa, Texas won the bareback riding with an 80-point ride on Aces Wild’s Tiki Torch Saturday, winning $1,697. Deudney also won second in the bull riding with a 78.5 point ride. He collected $3,034 in all for his night’s work in the two events.

Barrel racer Whitley Sharp of Parma, Idaho made a 15.29 second run Saturday, tying Abigail Knight of Charlo, Montana, who made her run during the slack performance.

They each won $1,855.

Two events were won Thursday night. Bull rider Stefan Tonita of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, took first place and $1,748 for his 79.4 ride on Big Bend’s Fast Money Thursday night.

There were only five qualified rides, so the sixth place money was divided among the top five.

Steer wrestler Gus McGinn of Haynes, Oregon won that event with a 4.0 second run, collecting $1,908. He edged Will Powell of St. Ignatius, Montana Stock was supplied by Aces Wild Pro Rodeo, with Big Bend Rodeo, Flying Five Rodeo and Fettig Pro Rodeo serving as sub contractors.

The Newport Rodeo added a third performance this year, Thursday night.

Rodeo Association President Ray Hanson said he estimated 9,000 people attended the rodeo, up from last year’s attendance of about 7,800 for two performances. He said while not full, the Thursday crowd was adequate. He said Friday’s performance wasn’t sold out but was close and that Saturday did sell out.

There was one injury in the bull riding. Jayde Murphy of Joilete, Montana, was knocked out when he came off the bull Mad Cap.

He was transported by ambulance to the hospital but declined treatment and left.

“We’re thankful for the ambulance,” Hanson said.

He said Murphy was conscious as he left the arena.
