What can the state do to get more affordable housing?
I support free market policies that increase housing affordability for everyone. We need permitting to be streamlined and regulations to be brought down to reasonable levels to incentivize developers to invest in affordable housing. We need to restore local control for land use so that the government closest to the people can make decisions that best support their people’s housing needs, this includes allowing counties to easily opt out of the Growth Management Act if they find it to be negatively impacting the people.
How should the state fund roads in light of the declining gas tax revenues?
We need to cut unnecessary regulations to reduce the cost of road construction and maintenance. It would help if it didn’t cost far more to build and maintain roads in Washington than most states. We should also stop using road tax revenue for environmental projects and use those dollars for their intended purpose. We should also dedicate sales tax for vehicle purchases to road maintenance.
What is your most important issue?
The fundamental job of the government and my top priority is public safety. Washington is lowest in the nation for the number of law enforcement officers per capita and has been for 14 years. We need to support our law enforcement officers who keep us safe and empower them to get crime and drugs under control so people can feel safe in their homes, on the streets, and at school.
