Pend Oreille Mine dewatering stops

METALINE FALLS – The Pend Oreille Mine is entering its last stages, although it will likely take more than a decade before the mine is filled with water, according to a spokesman from Teck Mine. Workers have stopped pumping water out of the mine and the mine is expected to fill with water.

“The dewatering pumps have been decommissioned and we estimate a 15-to-20-year fill timeline,” said Dale Steeves of Teck Resources LTD. Teck Resources owns Pend Oreille Mine. The mine has a comprehensive closure plan to guide reclamation activities and ensure the safety of employees, working closely with the Department of Ecology, Steeves said.

There are currently about 20 employees at the site, and the workforce will decrease over the next five years as closure activities continue, he said.
