Donation jar for library raises money for books

NEWPORT – It turns out putting a donation jar with some surplus library books raises money for the library. That’s what Kat Schutte, chair of the Friends of the Pend Oreille County Library District found.

“The idea started when Salesky Auto Service generously offered space for the Friends to provide books and a donation jar,” she said.

When Schutte returned to check the book inventory and the donation jar, she discovered Salesky’s customers to be both readers and generous.

“The $180 in the donation jar will go toward funding everything from books for preschoolers to receive in the mail, provide prizes for the Summer Reading Program, to authors other speakers and events, art supplies and so much more,” she said. She said she also needed to check on the inventory more often.

She said that monthly donations are down at their ongoing Back Door Book Sale at the Newport Library Branch, so the $180 was appreciated.

Schutte said the Friends voted to contact other businesses where customers either wait for service, such as an oil change, haircut or tire change, or to business where people take a break, such as coffee shops, cafes and restaurants, to see if they would like to a “mini ongoing book sale.”

Schutte said it could be a winwin situation for the business and Friends. Any interested business owner or manager is invited to contact the Friends at 509-671-4303 or email POCLDFriends@ Gmail.com.
