NEWPORT – People can come learn about Tai Chi, rock painting and fiber arts during the Create Center for the Arts demonstrations at their free Coffee in the Garden events, held on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to noon.
July 25 Anna Taylor will be offering an intro to Tai Chi demonstration, Aug. 1 Jean Wakeley will demonstrate rock painting and Aug. 8 Pend Oreille Fiber Arts will demonstrate weaving and knitting.
In addition to the Coffee in the Garden presentations, there is a spinners workshop held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Create. The North Country Weavers meet there the second Wednesday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. and a hand stitchery group meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 1-3 p.m., both at Create. People should call first to make sure the fiber art workshops are happening the day they want to attend.

Tour The Cutter Theatre
METALINE FALLS – Building tours of the Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls are offered on Saturday, Aug. 3, 17 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls. Self guided building tours are also offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Cutter Theatre is located at 302 Park Street in Metaline Falls.
Sravasti Abbey offers sharing the Dharma Day July 28
NEWPORT – Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport, opens its doors on Sunday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Sharing the Dharma Day, an opportunity for curious seekers to explore Buddhist ideas on living with compassion. Founder and abbess Venerable Thubten Chodron will address this month’s theme, “Small Acts of Compassion Can Have Big Results.” Registration is helpful but not required. Find more details on SravastiAbbey.org. Sharing the Dharma Day activities include a guided meditation, a talk, a vegetarian potluck lunch, and a facilitated discussion. Topics are drawn from the book, An Open-hearted Life: Transformative Methods for Compassionate Living, by Venerable Thubten Chodron and Eastern Washington University psychologist Russell Kolts. ‘Late Night at the Playhouse’ Friday, Saturday
NEWPORT – The Unusual Suspects Improv group will perform Friday and Saturday, June 26-27 at the Pend Oreille Playhouse. Show times are 7 p.m. for both days. General admission is $7 and tickets can be purchased online at Pendoreilleplayers.com, as well on the performance nights, 30 minutes before the show.
“Late Night at the Playhouse” is Newport’s very own version of your favorite show, like Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. Sketches, improv and musical talents are among the onstage acts. Seating is limited due to staging for the show.
