NEWPORT – Are you curious about what’s happening in the night sky? Pend Oreille County Library, Selkirk Alliance for Science, and Kalispel Tribe Natural Resources Department invite the community to a free public viewing in real-time of the dark sky through telescopes.
Mark your calendar for Friday, Aug. 9. Gates open at 9:15 p.m. at Indian Creek Community Forest, 1802 Indian Creek Road, Newport.
At 10:15 p.m., during an astronomer-led tour of constellations, you can see with the naked eye, followed by view of the night skies through a variety of telescopes. This is a family-friendly event guided by local astronomer Sandy Nichols and a crew of amateur astronomers. You will be guests on Kalispel Tribal land and need to be respectful and leave no trash or damage behind. No dogs allowed.
Parking is available at the lower lot and requires a short walk to the headquarters building for a quick video and the viewing area. Feel free to bring binoculars and chairs if you wish. Accommodations are available for those with mobility issues.
Here is a chance to explore the universe and beyond, providing there are clear skies, organizers said.
