NEWPORT – The man found floating in a pond at Srvasti Abbey last January has been identified as Dadul Namgyal, 64, the monk who had been missing from the Abbey since Nov. 7, 2023. He was found Jan. 4 but had not been identified nor a cause of death given.
According to Pend Oreille County Prosecutor and Coroner Dolly Hunt, Namgyai died by accidental drowning.
There had been an extensive search for Namgyal, using trained dogs, a drone and a helicopter, but he wasn’t found until January. Namgyal was the subject last week’s Voice of the Pend Oreille River Valley story calling attention to his disappearance and the fact that the cause of death hadn’t been released once a body was found in the pond.
