Sravasti Abbey offers Sharing the Dharma Day Aug. 18

NEWPORT – Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport, opens its doors on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for Sharing the Dharma Day, an opportunity for curious seekers to explore Buddhist ideas on living with compassion.

Founder and Abbess Venerable Thubten Chodron will address this month’s theme, “How Compassion Changes Us.”

Registration is helpful but not required. Find more details on SravastiAbbey.org.

Sharing the Dharma Day activities include a guided meditation, a talk, a vegetarian potluck lunch, and a facilitated discussion. Topics are drawn from the book, An Open-hearted Life: Transformative Methods for Compassionate Living, by Venerable Thubten Chodron and Eastern Washington University psychologist Russell Kolts.

The program is offered freely, and donations as well as food offerings are welcomed. (No meat, fish, onion, garlic or leeks please.)

A Buddhist monastery in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Sravasti Abbey is home to both monks and nuns.

It is among the first training monasteries for English-speaking practitioners in the U.S.

Sravasti Abbey is located at 692 Country Lane, Newport, Washington.
