Riders scramble to compete at Newport, Sandpoint

NEWPORT – Several rodeo competitors rode in both the Newport Rough Stock Rodeo Saturday night and the Bonner County Rodeo in Sandpoint, which took place Friday and Saturday.

For saddle bronc rider Jack Bentz of Crane, Oregon, it was worth the effort. Bentz rode at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo in Sandpoint Saturday night, winning first with an 80-point ride. He made the run to Newport, where the saddle bronc riding was held for the last event. Bentz won first at Newport, this time with an 82-point ride.

Bentz had the biggest payday of the Rough Stock Rodeo, winning $2,920. He won another $1,948 at Sandpoint.

Caleb McMillan of Soap Lake, Washington also rode at both shows. He won the All Around at Sandpoint with $3,454 in winnings, competing Friday. He was the only bull rider to make a ride there, taking that event with his 84-point ride.

McMillan couldn’t repeat at Newport, coming down early from his bull. McMillan also won the tie down roping at Sandpoint and placed third in the steer wrestling.

At Newport, saddle bronc rider Austin Krogh brought the crowd to their feet with his 81-point second place ride. Krogh, who lost his brother, Dylan, to a fentanyl overdose, had a heart touching letter read prior to his ride outlining the pain his family felt over the death. Kalispel tribal council member Curt Holmes also addressed the crowd, telling how addiction has affected his family. He said he and Krogh had become friends in the last two years since Dylan’s death. The Kalispel Tribe contributed money to the Rough Stock Rodeo for fentanyl abuse awareness and prevention.

At the Rough Stock Rodeo, barrel racing was competitive, with Quincey Downey of Omak turning in a 15.38 second run to win first and a $1,219 paycheck.

She edged Leigh Parker of Northport, Washington, who turned the cloverleaf pattern in 15.59 seconds.

Ryan Anderson won the ranch bronc riding with an 81-point ride.

He won $1,250. Steve Maupin won second with a 77- point ride for $750.

Bull riders had their hands full, with Ryson Sweeney, of Deer Park winning first and collecting $1,980 for a hard fought 66-point ride.

J.C. Merriott won second with a 56-point ride, picking up $1,320.

The Rough Stock Rodeo had an average size but enthusiastic crowd and no injuries. Stock was supplied by Aces Wild Pro Rodeo.
