Kalispel Tribe hosts children’s carnival in conjunction with opioid awareness event

CUSICK – The Kalispel Tribe announced a free Children’s Carnival, set to take place Aug. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Powwow Grounds in Usk. This event is open to the public and aims to raise awareness about the opioid crisis while providing a fun and engaging day for children and families in the community.

The carnival will feature a wide array of children’s activities and treats, including ice cream, bounce houses, cotton candy, face painting, balloon art, and popcorn. In addition to the fun, a limited number of free T-shirts promoting opioid awareness will be available, while supplies last.

Event organizer Hollie Axel emphasizes the importance of the carnival as a fun and educational event.

“We are hosting this carnival to bring our community together and educate everyone about the dangers of opioid misuse,” she said. “Our goal is to create a memorable and enjoyable day for the children while also spreading an important message about opioid awareness.”

Kalispel Tribal Council Vice Chair Curt Holmes says the tribe takes the opioid crisis in our region very seriously and wants to support events that shine a light on the issues facing our kids.

“As a parent, I understand that it’s sometimes tough to decide how early you should start talking with your kids about the devastating impacts of dangerous drugs,” Holmes said. “With this event, families can spend some fun time together while also learning how to have some of those tough conversations with the support of community prevention experts.”
