Family Fitness Before Summer Ends

Recently our 12-yearold nephew visited us from Georgia. While he was here, we took him kayaking, hiking, go-karting, played miniand disc golf, shot air rifles and bows, and went lake swimming. As the long days of summer start to wane, there’s still ample opportunity for families to soak up the sun and enjoy the great outdoors together. These activities not only provide quality time but also promote physical fitness and well-being for both kids and adults. Here are some fantastic ways to stay active and have fun as a family before the school bells ring again.

1. Hiking Adventures Hiking is an excellent way for families to explore nature, get some exercise, and spend time together. Choose trails that match your family’s fitness levels. For beginners or families with young children, opt for shorter, flatter trails. As your family becomes more experienced, you can tackle more challenging hikes.

Safety Tips: - Always carry plenty of water to stay hydrated.

- Wear appropriate footwear to prevent injuries. - Pack a first-aid kit for minor scrapes and bruises.

- Inform someone of your hiking plans and estimated return time.

2. Family Bike Rides Cycling is a fun and efficient way to get around and enjoy the scenery. Find a local bike trail or a quiet neighborhood and set off on a family bike ride. You can even make it a regular activity, exploring new routes each time.

Safety Tips: - Ensure everyone wears a helmet.

- Check that all bikes are in good working condition.

- Teach children the rules of the road if biking on streets.

- Use bike lanes or trails when available.

3. Kayaking and Canoeing For families near rivers, lakes, or the coast, kayaking and canoeing offer a fantastic way to stay fit and enjoy the water. Paddling works out the upper body while providing a unique perspective on the natural environment.

Safety Tips: - Everyone should wear a life jacket.

- Check the weather forecast before heading out.

- Choose calm waters, especially if you’re with younger children or beginners.

- Stay close to the shore and be aware of water currents.

4. Backyard Games Sometimes, the best adventures are found right in your backyard. Organize family-friendly games such as frisbee, badminton, or a scavenger hunt. These activities are not only fun but also help improve coordination and agility.

Safety Tips: - Clear the play area of any obstacles that might cause trips or falls.

- Stay hydrated, especially on hot days.

- Use sunscreen to protect against sunburn.

5. Nature Walks and Wildlife Watching Nature walks are a wonderful way to learn about local flora and fauna while getting some light exercise. Equip your kids with binoculars, a camera and a notebook to record the wildlife they spot. This can be an educational and engaging activity for all ages.

Safety Tips: - Stick to marked paths to avoid getting lost.

- Teach children to respect wildlife and observe from a distance.

- Apply insect repellent to prevent bites.

6. Swimming Whether in a pool, lake, or ocean, swimming is an excellent full-body workout that’s also incredibly fun. Organize swimming races, play water polo, or simply splash around together.

Safety Tips: - Always supervise children around water.

- Ensure everyone knows basic swimming skills.

- Use flotation devices for younger children or weaker swimmers.

- Be aware of water conditions and potential hazards like rip currents.

7. Gardening Together Gardening might not seem like an obvious choice for physical activity, but it involves plenty of bending, lifting, and digging. Plus, it’s a great way to teach kids about where their food comes from and the importance of caring for the environment.

Safety Tips: - Use child-sized tools for younger helpers.

- Wear gloves to protect your hands.

- Apply sunscreen and wear hats to shield yourself from the sun.

As summer draws to a close, these activities offer a wonderful way to make the most of the remaining warm days. Whether you’re hiking through forests, paddling on a lake, or simply playing in your backyard, these experiences will create lasting memories and instill a love for the outdoors in your children. Most importantly, they help keep the entire family fit and healthy. So, lace up your shoes, grab your gear, and head outside for some family fun before the leaves begin to fall.
