Gary Lee Fisher of Walla Walla, Washington passed away on April 14th, 2025 at the age of 80-years-old.
Gary was born on September 10th, 1944 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla. He attended Washington Grade School in Walla Walla and graduated from Newport High School in Newport, WAin 1962.
Gary graduated from Eastern Washington State University in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration, with a major in Management. A major in Accounting was earned in 1972.
Gary served in the Navy during the Vietnam era, earned the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer (Yeoman), and received an honorable discharge in 1972.
He was employed many summers at Rogers Canning Company in Walla Walla to earn money for the following year’s tuition. He worked as a sporting goods manager in Phoenix, AZ in 1970 and then started employment with the Army Corps of Engineers in 1974 in Walla Walla as an Accountant and Program Analyst. Gary retired from the Corps in 2006.
Gary enjoyed all sports, both as a participant and spectator. He played football, basketball, and baseball and earned many awards and trophies throughout his school years in Newport. He also played slow pitch softball for several summers in Cheney and Walla Walla.
For many years he enjoyed serving as Walla Walla Fantasy Baseball League’s second commissioner. Gary also coached many years in the Farm League Baseball program in the Pacific League and YMCA youth basketball in Walla Walla.
He also enjoyed his time as the commissioner of the annual Holiday Football Pool and the annual March Madness Pool.
Gary prized his 1966 Ford Bronco, which was entered in many car shows and received many awards.
Gary enjoyed his trips to Major League Baseball stadiums, visiting 22 of them, but in particular, he liked seeing the old Yankee Stadium, Fenway, and Wrigley Field. Gary’s favorite ballparks, though, were Kauffman Stadium and Dodger Stadium.
In his travels, Gary also visited the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, NASCAR races in Phoenix, the Orange Bowl in Miami, and the 2015 NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.
He was a proud supporter of local athletics as well, and regularly attended the games of Walla Walla High School, Walla Walla Community College, Washington State University, the Tri-City Americans, boxing matches all around the Pacific Northwest, and Seattle Mariners games. On August 15th, 2012, Gary watched Felix Hernandez throw his perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field.
Gary was a fisherman. He proudly caught a 25-pound spring Chinook salmon on the Columbia River.
Gary enjoyed his annual wintertime vacations in Mazatlán, Mexico, with warm sun, great food, and, of course, Pacificos and margaritas.
He took walks at Mill Creek for many years.
Gary is survived by son Chad Fisher of Long Beach, CA; daughter and son-inlaw Amanda and Gavin Boden of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Zachary and Grade Boden of Seattle, WA; sister and brother-in-law Norma (“Jeannie”) and Ken Abbott of Kalamazoo, MI; niece and nephew Shelley Kazlauskas of Lake Stevens, WA and Darren (“Tiger') Garland of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; several cousins; and his precious companion, Cheez.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Helen of Walla Walla, WA; best friend Gary Ellersick of Newport, WA; and his beloved dogs Blackie, Lucky, Maxie, Louie, Erving, Thunder, Buddy, and Bentley.
At Gary’s request there will be no memorial or funeral service.
