Les Kokanos

Les Kokanos

PRIEST RIVER

Les will be greatly missed, as he touched so very many lives. He was preceded in death by his mother Bernice, twin brother Stanley, and sisters Mary and Irene. He is survived by his wife Judy, their children; Barrie, Corina, Kevin, Lisa, Sabrina, and Marc, as well as his siblings: Mike, Larry, Elynore, and Josephine. As well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Les was born in Vernal, UT and spent a lot of his young life travelling the western states until finally planting roots in Priest River in the 1960s. Christmas was the highlight of Les’s year! He began the extravagant preparation in August of each year, so by Thanksgiving Day, his display was great enough to make NASA proud! Not only did Les love to decorate for Christmas, one of his favorite stores was the Christmas store in Leavenworth. He was like a kid in a candy store when it came to giving gifts. Each year our living room was piled high and Les would sit in his chair, twinkle in his eye just WAITING for each gift to be opened! Once opened, he had a commentary on each and every one including his beloved dog Bear who knew exactly which gift was his. The man loved Christmas! Besides his family, Les’s other “baby” was his rig at the mill. Les loved each and every 50 odd years that he spent with his mill family, and cherished the time both on and off the clock with his coworkers. Les was at the mill through 4 different owners, and often was seen having coffee or just a chat, with Buck, Wayne and the rest of “the boys”. Those memories are some of the things that he cherished most. In the mid 1980s, Les and Judy bought a house in downtown Priest River, so they could be closer to the ambulance garage and the fire hall. Les spent his life giving back to the community that he loved so well! He was a city councilman, worked as a reserve police officer, and helped start the West Pend Oreille Fire District where he was the chief for many years. He served on the ambulance which he and Judy both started with Sherry Mundy in the 80s, and those are only his official titles. Les and Judy had an open door policy and often hosted events in their home like the annual BBO on the Friday of Timber Days. They also had an open door for those EMTs on call from out of town that needed a place to stay and offered a warm meal. Those were fun and challenging times doing EMT meetings, CPR classes, and just being there for the people joining the cause to do anything for his town. Les’s call lire call number was WP1. He WAS WP1. Up until his retirement and long after, even though the new chief had been sworn in, everyone still called and referred to him as chief. During his time working at the mills his CB handle was Bonanza. Hey, Bonanza...
